Though it's not 100% confirmed yet, the most commonly accepted theory is that Philip killed his brother because his brother fell in love with a witch and Philip viewed witches as the enemy, he killed his brother in the name of the witch-hunting cause. The show has a boner for subverting tired old tropes like having the villain's mask come off at their last appearance or revealing the villain's sympathetic tragic backstory. But the Owl House subverted those by showing that some villains really are just evil because that's the way they were raised to.
Despite his immense power, Belos is not incapable of fear, as he was genuinely scared of the Collector's power and didn't want him to be free to share his knowledge with anybody else when his plan was finished. After the Day of Unity begins, he betrays the Collector by dropping him down a pit. When King frees him, Belos was shocked by this and absurdly tries to tell him that he kept his word on freeing him, only for the Collector to destroy his physical body. Consequently, this fact shows that Belos is unable to comprehend that his genocidal goal had become pointless by now, ironically much like how the Collector warned him that humanity has changed in the episode "King's Tide".
Upon following the stolen rebus to the local graveyard, Belos revealed himself when Luz finds a quivering Flapjack. Luz tries to fight Belos but he mocked her for purposely avoiding harming Hunter. As her mother and friends arrived, Belos mocked her desire to help others which led him to meeting the Collector. Belos fights Luz and the gang which they are beaten, Belos grabs Flapjack and says he doesn't care if their Palismen are harmed or not and begins to crush Flapjack to take his essence. This causes Hunter to fight back and stand up to him, fed up with Belos's toxic control and harming anyone and threw the titan blood in the water. After Hunter is rescued by Camila Noceda, Belos leaves his body and reformed his monster form.
Belos furiously blamed his brother for his own actions, claiming he tried to save his soul. Soon realizing that his own body was deteriorating, Belos made his way back to the Titan's skull, where he accessed his laboratory. After ignoring the ghosts of Caleb and the countless Golden Guards, Belos possessed an incubating Grimwalker only to find it was an insufficient host.
